Travel Guide to Keystone, CO

keystone coloradoLocated 12 miles east of Interstate 70, Keystone Resort is made up of three distinct villages which are nestled against Keystone Mountain and along the Snake River. The Keystone Village with its lake, the Adventure Center, the Keystone Lodge hotel, restaurants and shops, is a perfect location for families. The Mountain House Village is one of two access points to the mountain, and the rooms of the Mountain House are also available for events. The Keystone Inn hotel is just a short walk away over the river. River Run Village is the main access point to the mountain. The newly renovated gondola, brought back across the river into the village, means just a short walk from the free parking lots to the slopes, lit up until 8:00pm for night skiing. River Run is the hub for après ski with restaurants and bars, and also the brand new Warren Station, a performing arts and events center. In the summer River Run hosts many festivals and the mountain becomes a downhill mountain bike park.

About Keystone Colorado

restaurants keystone coHistory:
Edna and Max Dercum moved to Summit County in 1942 and opened Arapahoe Ski Basin in 1946. They operated the Ski Tip Lodge as the ski lodge for A-Basin. All the time Max dreamed of making Keystone Mountain into a ski area and he was finally able to gain a Forest Service permit to do so in 1967. His good friends Jane and Bill Bergman were able to help Max with financing by forming a corporation with the Ralston Purina Company, and the mountain opened in 1970. Bill was the first President of Keystone and Max was the director of the ski school. Max personally walked the mountain and laid out all of the trails, many of which are named after famous mines from the area, Jackwacker, Wild Irishman, Frenchman and Schoolmarm to name just a few. More terrain was added with the additions of North Peak and the Outback. In 1997 Keystone was purchase by Vail Resorts, and in 2003 the part of Keystone Mountain within the ski area was renamed Dercum Mountain. In 2004 the Erickson and Bergman bowls were added to the ski area.
