Travel Guide to Copper Mountain, CO

copper colorado ski areaCopper Mountain is a year round resort based on skiing in the winter and golf, mountain biking and road biking in the summers, and is located conveniently next to Interstate 70 at the foot of Vail Pass. Its three villages allow for access to the mountain and the ski terrain is naturally divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced slopes. The villages all have lodging, retail and dining, but the Village at Copper is the center of the resort with an events plaza, a lake, and a conference center. West Ten Mile Creek and the Summit County bike path also run through the resort.

About Copper Mountain

history of copper coloradoHistory:
During the Summit County mining boom copper was discovered in the area now known as Copper Mountain. By 1880 Judge John S. Wheeler had established a settlement at the junction of the Ten Mile and Gore mountain rages known as Wheeler Junction. Some of the buildings from this time are located on the Copper golf course and at the base of the Alpine lift in Copper Mountain’s East Village. In 1971 Chuck Lewis decided to build a ski resort and construction of the resort began that summer.

The ski area has 2,450 acres of terrain, an upper elevation over 12,000’, 22 lifts, 126 marked trails, and one run of 2.8 miles. The east side of the mountain is an expert skiing area, the middle is intermediate and the west is beginner, with terrain being divided naturally by level and location. The Copper Bowl on Tucker Mountain, one of Copper Mountain’ s four bowls, may be accessed by a cat on a first come first served basis. Conveniently most lesson programs start in Union Creek apart from some private lessons which go out of Copper Mountain Sports in the Village at Copper. At the upper levels of the mountain, various lifts allow for access to all of the expert bowls and back bowls.
